Chain Of Gold | Review of Cassandra Clare’s new trilogy

If you have been following my section on the blog, you might know by now that I´m a huge Cassandra Clare fan. She´s one of my favorite authors and every time she releases a new book, I devour it page by page, enjoying her wonderful prose and moving characters, some of my favorites are Alec Lightwood, Magnus Bane, Raphael Santiago, and Lily Chen, there are too many to name them all. If you haven´t been living in a box over, let´s say, THE PAST DECADE you might already know the books I´m talking about but, in the rare case you were, she wrote the best-seller books in The Shadowhunter Chronicles, a world that keeps growing day by day with every book and short story that she shares with us and with every person that decides to read them.

Title: Chain Of Gold

Author: Cassandra Clare

Release Date: March 3rd. 2020

Following book: Chain Of Iron

Main characters: Cordelia Carstairs, James Herondale, Matthew Fairchild, Lucie Herondale

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

A few weeks ago, she released the first book in her newest trilogy “The Last Hours” and it centers in the lives of the descendants of “The Infernal Devices” and once again, we get to enjoy our favorite downworlders like Magnus Bane, Ragnor Fell and our favorite Shadowhunter families that we´ve now grown fond of: Herondales, Lightwoods, Carstairs, Fairchilds and so much more. Also, with appearances of our favorite trio, our lovely Will Herondale, Tessa Gray and Jem Carstairs.

The story starts with Cordelia Carstairs, daughter of Jem´s uncle Elias and Sona, and sister of Alastair Carstairs. All her life, she spent traveling throughout Europe with her family so they could get a cure for her father, who had been ill for a long time, she had a quiet lonely life, her only steady friend being Lucy Herondale, her parabatai to be. However, with the excuse of having to train with Lucy, her mother, brother and her, decide to have a prolonged stay in London while her father was being tried for a crime that Cordelia was certain that he didn´t commit. And she was determined to prove it. To do so, she needed help, so she teams up with the sons and daughters of important Shadowhunter families and soon, gets enrolled in a big mess and suddenly, she realizes that her “allies” are now her friends so her mission, becomes a much bigger one with too many things at stake.

If I had to be honest, I didn´t have many expectations for this book at first, while everyone was loving the characters even before reading it, I was rather apprehensive about it. Since “The Infernal Devices” is not my favorite trilogy form her, I wasn´t sure how much I would come to love the story about their sons and daughters and to my surprise, it seems that very much.

I love every character (but Grace Blackthorn, of course, she sucks) and they were so beautiful and deep, she managed to create a convincing backstory for each one of them and gave them space to develop, without making me feel overwhelmed. My favorites were:  Alastair Carstairs, Matthew Fairchild, Anna Lightwood, Cordelia Carstairs and Thomas Lightwood. Also, I enjoyed sreading my beautiful Will Herondale and James Carstairs together, I missed them too much. And they are such amazing parent/uncle!

I truly recommend this book, even though you have to have a little bit more patience at the beginning, because it´s a little heavy and it took me long to read. And that cliffhanguer! Cassandra you better deliver the next one soon otherwise, I will die of intrigue.
